Most Hindi stories for children online come from channels with no face and no name behind them. This post is about a different kind: a named storyteller, speaking in his own voice, with no screen needed. Press play on any episode below, and read along if you like.

Who is Mayank?

Mayank Mishra is an actor and storyteller who writes and narrates his stories in his own voice. On My Sleepy Tale he tells two series: Bhagwan Kaun Hain? for ages 3 to 8, and Ghoomte Phirte for ages 4 to 12.

In his own introduction, he says he begins a journey meant for children and the new generation, so they can listen and be inspired to explore. In each Ghoomte Phirte episode he visits one place and tells its true stories, its real people, and the one special thing you remember afterwards.

— मयंक मिश्रा, Who is Mayank? में

Why a real voice matters

A story told by a person carries small things a synthetic voice cannot: where he pauses, how he laughs, how he says a word your own grandparents might say. For a child growing up far from relatives, that sound can feel like family.

A real voice also makes a good habit. Children often ask for the same episode again and again, and a familiar voice makes that easy: you press play, they settle, and you are free to sit beside them instead of reading aloud after a long day. Parents who are still learning Hindi themselves can simply listen along and learn together with their child.

Namaste. Main Mayank Mishra hoon. Main ek abhineta hoon aur kahaanikaar bhi. Aaj se hum ek naya safar shuru kar rahe hain.

Bhagwan Kaun Hain?

This series (the subtitle is Bachho ke liye Bhagwan ke kisse, "God stories for children") is for ages 3 to 8. We describe it by its values: stories of wonder, gratitude and kindness, told through the idea of Bhagwan (God, in Hindi). It follows the curious questions kids really ask at bedtime, such as where the stars come from and why we cannot see the wind. It is for families of any faith, or none. The stories invite a child to notice, wonder and say thank you. They do not tell anyone what to believe.

Three episodes to start with. Each has the real narration, and a short excerpt of the text (never the whole story, which you will find in the player).

Curiosity, wonder

Notes (English): A curious boy called Deepu cannot sleep and asks his grandmother a big question. She carries him up to the roof, under thousands of shining stars, and they wonder together.

Patience, wonder

Notes (English): Aarav lives with his grandfather and has very big questions. Dadu gives him a small seed to plant, and Aarav learns that the most important things sometimes happen quietly, out of sight.

Hamaari aaj ki kahani ka naam hai, Chhota Beej aur Bada Ped. Ek chhota sa gaon tha, jahan Aarav apne Dadu ke saath rehta tha. Aarav saat saal ka tha, par uske sawaal bahut bade-bade hote the. Ek din Dadu ne Aarav ko ek chhota sa beej diya aur kaha, "Ye lo beta, ise apne aangan ki mitti mein daal do."

Hawa Ki Kahani (latest)

The newest episode starts with a bedtime question every parent knows. Five-year-old Meera asks her mother why she cannot see Bhagwan. Her mother opens the window a little and asks her to put a hand out in the night air and close her eyes. The idea at the heart of it is a gentle one: you cannot see the wind, yet you feel it. The story is about curiosity and gratitude for the things that are quietly always there.

Curiosity, gratitude

Notes (English): Meera, five, asks her mother why God cannot be seen. Her mother teaches her a small game with the night breeze: close your eyes, hold out a hand, and notice what you feel.

Meera paanch saal ki ek chulbuli si bachchi thi. Roz raat ko sone se pehle woh apni maa se ek sawaal zaroor poochti thi. Aaj ka sawaal bahut bada tha. "Maa, bhagwan kyon nahi dikhte? Sab kehte hain woh hain, par main toh unhe kabhi dekh nahi paayi."

Ghoomte Phirte

Ghoomte Phirte means roughly "wandering about". These are funny, clean, family-friendly stories from the places Mayank wanders to: facts, real people, and the one amazing thing about each place. They are made for kids and parents to enjoy together, and the series is for ages 4 to 12. The newest episode so far is a bonus fantasy for the youngest listeners, with a child, a glowing blue bird and a world of clouds.

Imagination, kindness

Notes (English): Chiku loves visiting new places. One day a shining blue bird called Tim-Tim invites him to ride a cloud to a magical sky kingdom.

Ek baar Chiku naam ka ek pyaara bachcha tha. Use nayi-nayi jagahon par ghoomna bahut pasand tha. Ek din bagiche mein khelte-khelte use ek chamakti hui neeli chidiya dikhaai di. Chiku: "Are wah! Tum kitni sundar ho! Tumhara naam kya hai?"

Keeping Hindi alive at home abroad

Many families who move far from home want their children to keep their mother tongue, and find it hard in daily life. Statistics Canada's 2021 Census analysis found that in households where everyone knows Hindi, 31% do not speak Hindi at home, and only 4% speak it alone (Statistics Canada). Hindi is known in the house, but English tends to win the evening.

Bedtime is one of the easiest places to turn that around, because it is already a daily habit. A few small ideas:
